Krill Mass Stranding Event

Last night we had a fairly high tide and winds out of the north. As the tide receded these krill got stranded on the north side of our peninsula.
These are fairly large krill, about 2 years old. Krill live to be at least seven years old.
 Poor guys.
The birds are going to eat well today.
I can't get the smell of krill off my hands. Hopefully tonight high tide will wash them all away before the whole station starts smelling like dead krill.
Up close with a Krill's compound eye.
Krill have photophores under their tails. These can create blue light. These krill in this tide pool are still somewhat alive and their blue lights are visible if you look closely. The krill scientist on station thinks that this helps them communicate with each other.
