Ice Core Drilling, Bananas, & Lasers

The ice core team just reached 306 meters down, which correlates to around 3000 years ago. These are pictures from when I visit last week.
The drill is rotated to pull the core out. They do 2 meters at a time. The drill is lowered by a cable and drills using gravity.

You can see some of the layers in the ice if you look closely.
They cut the ice in to meter long sections and put it into tubes and put it into the ice vault to wait for a cold flight out of the south pole.

This is one of the lidar lasers in ARO. It measure the height of the clouds as they pass by. You can see the green lasers at night pointing up at the sky apparently, that should be interesting to see.
This is what happens when you leave a banana out, that is how dry it is here.
A funny comic in the lab.
