Ice Tunnels

Went on rounds with a utilities technician to see what he does because there might be times in the winter when they need someone to volunteer to do these ice tunnel rounds. The ice tunnels are at about a steady -55 F and carry the water and the waste water to and from the station. 

 

This is an escape route. The tunnels come off of the passageway between the beer can and arches.

 All the tunnels are cut out with ice chain saws and the blocks are man hauled out. The ice tunnels are decorated with small trinkets, artwork and other memorabilia.

 This is where the current waste out flow goes. That's the sewer line filling up the old water rodwell.

 Its pretty cold down there.

 This hole is bored in to the ceiling and to the surface (its covered), its about 35 feet or so up.

 There are some awesome ice crystals down here!
